Dorsets Global Production company IPP Joules defies the snow with an Asterisk based Phone System from Poundbury Systems and Microsoft Small Business Server PDF Print E-mail

That was the news from Poundbury Systems this week. With most of Dorset (and the UK) hit by snow and ice, what was the impact on local businesses?

Poundbury Systems have long understood the benefits of flexible working solutions for their customers and this week the foresight in this approach showed its true value.

'Many of our customers had issues in getting some or all of their staff to their offices. The solution was simple. The Microsoft Small Business Server based remote working facilities that we had set up allowed staff to use their home PC's to have quick, easy and secure access to their work files. No time was wasted and no business was lost. The picture was completed by diverting the Asterisk based phones to home and mobile numbers, something that is quick and easy to do.' commented Clare Jenkins, Director at PSL.

Bob Cottell of ipp agreed "At ipp, much of our work is time critical and, as we deal with our clients around the world, guess what - they don't care what the weather is like in the UK and they expect us to have contingency plans in place. During the current weather, we are able to work equally well from home as we can in the office, thanks to PSL putting 'remote access' in place. We can access information and documents on our servers as normal, maintain email contact with clients and use 'instant messenging' as an effective way to maintain internal communication.

PSL has given us the flexibility to allow staff to work from home, delay coming into the office until the roads are less icy or even leave early to avoid congested roads. We are able to spend less time worrying about the weather and road conditions and more time maintaining service levels for your clients, during these chilly times.

Many thanks to PSL"

Skills pledge PDF Print E-mail
SKILLS PLEDGE CASE STUDY

Company – Poundbury Systems Limited

Dorchester company, Poundbury Systems Ltd, has announced that it has signed up to the Skills Pledge to help build the skills of its growing workforce.

The Skills Pledge is a government funded initiative launched by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to ensure that employees are skilled, competent and able to make a full contribution to the success of their organisation.

Poundbury Systems Ltd, established in 2001, specialise in the design, installation and support of IT and telephony systems, working in partnership with customers to increase their efficiency and to keep them up to date with all areas of their business communications.

The company’s staff base has grown from just two members to 10 in the past few years and looks set to continue that trend in the future.

Clare Jenkins, director for Poundbury Systems Ltd, says:
“Poundbury Systems Ltd signed up to the Skills Pledge in September 2007 because we had realised the importance of having well trained staff at ground level. We consider our staff our most important asset and commit large amounts of time and money to training. We have Investor in People status and take on apprentices every year. We also have extremely good links with all the local schools and regularly go in to show them the benefits of a career in I.T and the job paths that are available to them.

“When we take on a new apprentice, we train them to NVQ Level 2 standard before we even start training them in their specialised field. It’s one thing to say you are supportive of training young people with lasting qualifications, but another to do something about it. We wanted to be seen taking part in this scheme and hopefully it will spur on other businesses to do the same.”

With an ever developing business, Poundbury Systems Ltd is always under pressure to keep up with a market that is constantly evolving. The company recently met with the British Chambers of Commerce and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, along with 10 other companies from around the country. They talked about the UK skills issues and shortages and how these related directly to the training of young apprentices in various businesses.

Poundbury Systems Ltd is also a Premier Partner member of Dorset Business, part of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and so actively seeks to maintain and improve its business practice and support other companies in the local area.

The Skills Pledge is open to all employers of all sizes in the private, public and voluntary sectors, and the Government will provide funding to enable organisations to support staff to gain basic literacy and numeracy skills as well as their first full Level 2 qualification.

Team Dorset gets connected... PDF Print E-mail

POUNDBURY Systems Limited (PSL) is an award-winning computer systems integrator based in Poundbury, Dorchester, which provides forward-looking technology solutions for SMEs across all sectors.

Since starting out 2001, PSL has enjoyed rapid growth and won numerous awards including the British Chamber of Commerce’s South West Business of the Year in 2007.

Director Clare Jenkins is in no doubt about what makes PSL special: ‘Our staff are exceptional. They are highly skilled, but able to translate a technical issue into everyday business terms.’

PSL runs an active community relations programme and gives time and resources to local education establishments, including Thomas Hardye School and Weymouth College, as well as donating to Dorset charities.
?As the 2012 Games approach, Clare and her team are aware they’ll need extra staff and are increasing their interaction with schools as part of a future-proof recruitment drive. The company is also developing video conferencing technology, to reduce the need for local businesses to travel during the Games.

‘We see video conferencing as the next big thing for businesses, especially those outside London. We’d be developing it even if the Games weren’t happening, but the event gives everyone an extra push. I think it will be a catalyst for Dorset in many ways.

‘It has already given Dorset a short-term motivational boost. In the long-term, the benefits of improving the area’s infrastructure will be enormous.

‘Team Dorset is not about opting for a quick fix; it’s about building long-term business relationships and improving the environment. We all stand to benefit from the exciting and demanding challenges the Games will bring. Dorset is a wonderful place to live and work and we want it to remain so for many more generations.’
